Define Actus Reus

Actus Reus

Actus reus is legal Latin for "guilty act." In criminal law, two things must be concurrent for a crime to have been committed. The first is mens rea, or the requisite mental intent to commit a crime. The second is the actus reus, or the criminal act itself. For example, the act of firing a gun is not itself unlawful. But firing a gun while you have the mental intent to kill another person can constitute a crime.
